Policy 2464 - Gifted & Talented Students


Sterling Regional High School recognizes that all children have unique strengths and talents.  We strive to provide opportunities to develop social, emotional and academic abilities of each student.  

The district recognizes that some students possess and demonstrate extraordinary levels of ability in one or more content area.  In accordance with the NJDOE "Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Act", Sterling has developed an Identification process  described below.  At the high school level, Honors, Advanced Placement are offered to challenge students and maximize their potential.  

Identification

  • AP Potential reports (PSATs)
  • Honors Placement tests are used as a secondary source of data to determine students’ eligibility in Honors courses
  • LinkIt! Benchmark assessments in Math and Reading are used to measure students’ mastery towards grade level standards
  • NJSLA are statewide assessments that assess students’ progress toward the NJSLS in mathematics, ELA, and science.

    Complaint

  • In accordance with 18A: 35-38, an individual who believes that Sterling High School has not complied with the provisions of the act may file a complaint to the Board of Education.
Please note:  the complaint process is different from an appeal for placement of a student.  The complaint process only deals with alleged procedural compliance as outlined in the Act.  This process will yield no change to prior student placement decisions.

The complaint shall include: 

  • The name, address, and contact information of the complainant; and 
  • A statement that the identified school district is not in compliance with the provisions of this act, and the specific facts on which the allegation of non compliance is based.
