MILITARY SERVICE ACADEMIES: To be accepted into any service academy listed below, except for the Coast Guard Academy, you must first be nominated by a US Senator, US Representative, or the Vice President of the United States, who can nominate applicants to any academy except the Merchant Marine Academy.

ROTC: ROTC programs provide officer training for students during college, which could potentially be in exchange for scholarship money. In return, the students commit to military service for a set period of time after graduation. ROTC programs are offered at many schools and allow students to have a traditional college experience while preparing for his or her future as an officer in the United States military.

MILITARY ENLISTMENT: Before selecting a branch of military service, a potential recruit must meet the military's basic entrance requirements. Each branch of service maintains different requirements; however, some requirements apply to the military as a whole. These requirements include factors such as age, education level, physical condition, and US citizenship status.
